  • Honey

First found in a tomb in Ancient Egypt, honey is about 5,500 years old. Revered in ancient Egypt, honey remains edible over long periods. In 2015, while excavating tombs in Egypt, the archaeologists found about 3000-year-old honey that was fully edible. The honey was placed in honey pots in the tomb of the deceased pharaoh King Tut, as the Egyptians believed that the honey would keep him contended and happy on his journey after life. Honey is essentially pure sugar, with no fat and a pack of vitamins and minerals.

  • Mesopotamian Stew

When it comes to the oldest written stew recipe, it is the Mesopotamian Stew recipe that dates to 3750 BC. The ancient food recipe is from a Sumerian cuneiform tablet in the Yale Cuneiform collections. It is for a fragment lamb stew called Tuh’u that was prepared with certain aromatics, meat chunks, fat, and vegetables. It was common across different cultures to boil meat or fish in water over a fire with grains and vegetables. And now with advanced culinary practices, spices like garlic powder, cumin seeds, onion powder, and coriander powder, among others are being used to prepare the Mesopotamian stew.   • Garlic Mustard Seeds

It dates to at least 6000 years ago when Garlic Mustard Seeds were used as a spicy seasoning in prehistoric European cookware. Researchers found evidence of garlic mustard in the residues left on ancient pottery pieces found in Germany and Denmark. The spice was discovered alongside fat residues from fish and meat. In 17th century Britain, the seasoning was added to fish and meat meals that were cooked in pots.

  • Popcorn

Interestingly, the oldest snack food discovered was Popcorn. It is over 7000 years old and originated in Peru and Mexico. Archaeological research found the oldest maize husk that was said to be the evidence of popcorn preparation by ancient indigenous peoples. It was made by properly wrapping the popcorn cob in a husk and placing it on smoldering coals.

  • Tamales

The origin of Tamales dates from 5000 to 8000 BCE. They started in what is now known as Mexico, Central America, and South America. Tamales were first eaten by the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Toltec civilizations, whose people took tamales while hunting or on long trips. They also used tamales to feed soldiers when they for battle. As tamales were easy to carry, they were like fast food in ancient days and were also considered the first grab-and-go meal.

  • Bread

Bread is considered to be first prepared probably some 30000+ years back and is one of the very first foods made by mankind. The Neolithic farmers began cultivating grain and cereal-based products like bread became the staple food.
